The Day I Turned 29 - September 17, 2011

I took the week of my birthday off for my vacation. I wanted more than anything to at least to see the ocean before I went back to work. So, for my birthday, Andrew took me to Ventura and Santa Barbara.

Andrew got ready first and while I was getting ready, he left to go get "something." When he showed up, he told me to go into the bedroom and don't come out until he said so. As soon as he said he was ready, I came out and he was holding 4 big cupcakes from Frosting Ink, with a little sign that said "Happy Birthday Putti!" and a lit pink candle! He started to sing Happy Birthday to me, and then I joined in, haha, made my wish and blew out the candle. I was so happy and it was so sweet of him to surprise me like that! The cupcakes were so huge! Even though it was 10 in the morning, we ate the Red Velvet cupcake, and man it was rich, but it was yummy. He got us a snickerdoodle, banana split, and a chocolate one also.

He wanted to bring a couple of cupcakes with us so we can enjoy them at the beach, so I took the snickerdoodle and the chocolate one. We ended up finally leaving around 1pm because I wanted to see my parents before we left and Andrew wanted to drop off some records to Ronald.

I remember us being so tired on the ride there. We were trying everything to keep us awake. As soon as we got to the 126, I took over the driving so Andrew could take a nap. We stopped at Salzer's in Ventura, which is a pretty awesome store that sells CDs, DVDs, books and records on the first floor, and on the second floor, they had all kinds of cool, funny and interesting gifts (loooots of Hello Kitty stuff). Plus, half of the floor was a smoke shop. I was so stoked to see Bridesmaids on the shelf because it was supposed to be released in Bakersfield the following Tuesday, but I didn't want to buy it because I'm not used to spending more than $20 for a DVD. But Andrew ended up buying it for me along with Russell Brand's My Booky Wook for my birfday =). I love the way Russell Brand writes. It's actually funnier than some of his stand up stuff.

Andrew hunting...

My favorite thing to do whenever Andrew shops for records is to look through them also, but not to buy. I find the most weirdest photography and illustrations sometimes on albums. A lot of them make me laugh, but most of them are frickin' ridiculous.

Geez, what a band photo...

Bizarre...

After the record store, we got coffee at Peet's on Victoria and then we continued on to Rocket Fizz. Ever since we found this place, we've always had to make a stop here. This place is just plain awesome. They have the largest selection of soda pop I've ever seen, plus they sold the old timer candy and silly toys. Aaaand, they were playing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on their big flat screen TV.

Next up, we headed down to Main Street. We just walked around, checked out a Buffalo Exchange and then went back to the car. There was Beer Fest going on and there were just too many drunk and stupid people on the street. On our way to the Freeway, some of these people walking on Main were just begging to be hit.

As we entered the 101, I got so happy to finally see the ocean. I always get so excited and feel childlike whenever I see the ocean. I hate swimming in it or even getting my feet wet in it. But when I find that place on the pier, where I can see nothing but the ocean, letting all the sounds and the smells take over my senses, getting lost in something so big, it's a feeling I cannot really describe. All I know, it's one of the moments where I truly feel at peace.

We found parking on one of the small streets off of State and we were staaaaarvvving. We stopped in H&M but I didn't find anything. I tried to Yelp for places to eat. We were hoping we'd find a nice Italian restaurant, but there were so many, so we just started walking towards the pier, hoping we'd find something. Some of the places I found were more bar like atmospheres, plus I think there was a fight showing on the TV. But Andrew wanted to find more of a quiet sit down restaurant so that I can have a nice birthday dinner. I thought we weren't going to find a place because we were getting closer to the underpass which leads you to the pier, but we found a cluster of restaurants. Andrew ended up picking Holdren's. Man it was fancy! I wanted to take pictures in it but I kinda felt out of place, so I tried to be secretive about it.

Andrew ordered us coconut shrimp for appetizers, I had the halibut and he had the filet mignon. We were so hungry and the food was so good and flavorful, we forgot to take pictures of the food, haha. There was a table behind us who ordered an ten year old Opus One. A bottle of wine that costs probably around $250 if sold in a restaurant. It was buck wild.

After a yummy dinner, we walked back to the car to grab our coats and cupcakes. We walked to Jitters Cafe and got some drip coffee. There was a really good jazz band composed of a younger batch of kids that was playing on their floor.

I was amazed how talented they were for their age. We watched them for a while and then we headed down to the pier. These are some of the interesting things we passed on the way to the ocean:

We also passed an local art festival going on. There was a band playing and there were so many artists painting their stuff on the side of this building. I was hoping that they were all working on one collaborative mural, but I guess we will never know until we go back.

I was really happy that the pier wasn't busy at all. It was so nice and quiet, so we had our pick of the benches. We walked all the way down and picked a bench where I could see the disappearing horizon and be close enough to the shore to hear the crashing waves and the slow creeping of the waves retreating back. For the rest of the night, we just ate our cupcakes, drank our coffee and talked. It was a very nice way to end the trip.

Thank you Andrew for a wonderful day!
