Next up, we went down into Silverlake where Andrew went to Rockaway Records and I just hung out at Silverlake Coffee across the street and played Zelda Ocarina of Time on my 3DS. Plus I got to chat about guitar gear with my brother while I tried to enjoy my latte, so that was cool too. I have no idea why this place got good reviews. The service was terrible and so was my latte. The atmosphere however, was nice. I sat outside in their patio and played away until Andrew was done looking around.
Then we headed over to Melrose to visit the Johnny Cupcakes shop. Ever since our friends Bobby and Julia told me about this place, I wanted to see it for myself. The shop is beyond awesome and so creative, geez!!! I was even more stoked because Andrew was so sweet, I couldn't believe he bought me a Johnny Cupcakes Hello Kitty shirt. They ran out of to-go boxes so they gave me a pin of my choice plus other goodies and stuck it all in a bag. I felt like a little kid on Halloween. =)
Andrew really wanted Thai food so I Googled a place called Thai Pepper that had 5 star reviews. It was also close to this bookstore Andrew wanted to check out. But, oh man was that a bad idea. We get there, and it's in a ghetto, abandoned, rundown plaza, right next to the freeway. There was no sign nor marquee. We just see a neon Open sign in the window in one of the suites. We should have took this as a sign to go eat somewhere else but our curiosities were pulling us through their door. It was suuuuper creepy in there, dreary, no customers, about 10 empty tables, and the lady didn't even know we walked in. She was reading a paper and had no idea we were just standing there in front of her for about 3 minutes. Me and Andrew kept looking at each other, and then at the lady, then back at each other. Andrew broke the silence and then she told us to sit down anywhere with a huge smile on her face. She seemed really sweet. When she brought us our menus, poor Andrew was frightened. He really wanted to leave and eat somewhere else but we already sat down and didn't want to be rude. So he saw a sign that said "Cash Only" and he took this as an opportunity for us to leave without feeling like assholes. With all the good reviews, I bet the food was good, but the atmosphere was too shady for us. So, with our stomachs growling we decided to just go to Counterpoint Books. Luckily there was a small sushi restaurant called Sushi Taiyo right next to it, and that was right next to the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre.
Sushi Taiyo was pretty good food. Decent sushi for the price, plus their chicken teriyaki was served with fried potatoes. What?! Yes, fried potatoes. Man, what a combination! It was yummy! They also had these private booths that had sliding doors, which I thought was pretty cool. I felt kind of creepy taking pictures at a restaurant but I tried my best. I tried to do it secretively, that's why some of the photos are reaaally bad, haha.
There was also a really obnoxious drunk guy sitting at the table by the window, and every other word out of his mouth was "fuck" or "fuckin," or "my art, this" or "...because I'm an artist." Yeah, that sucked but all in all, the dinner was great.
As a huge line was forming for the UCB Theatre, we made our way next door to Counterpoint Records and Books. Andrew's friend Beau recommended this place to him so it was our first time checking it out. What a cool store! If you like records and books, check this place out!
Next up, the 3rd and final part...
